The Japanese word ichimatsu (市松) refers to "checkered pattern" or "checkerboard pattern." It consists to a design or pattern characterized by alternating squares arranged in a grid-like structure, typically in two contrasting colors.

The ichimatsu pattern has been popular in various forms of Japanese art and textile design. This pattern is named after Ichimatsu Sanogawa, an 18th-century Kabuki actor who famously wore trousers with this design.
